Who doesn't love Sanna Annukka?

Wie houdt er niet van Sanna Annukka? Ik vind alles van haar prachtig, tot aan haar snoeppapiertjes. Ze maakte vooral hele mooie dingen voor Marimekko. Over het algemeen is haar werk niet zo goedkoop,  en ook niet altijd even makkelijk te verkrijgen, dus ben ik alleen in het bezit van een paar mooie ansichtkaarten. Maar misschien komt daar wel verandering in.

Want onlangs las ik op Twitter (via Oh Marie en Print&Pattern), dat Sanna een verhaal van Hans Christian Andersen heeft geïllustreerd, The Fir Tree. (Misschien wist u dat allen al lang en heeft iedereen er over geblogd, excuses dan, ik loop zo'n 300 berichten achter in m'n Reader.) Al ken ik dat hele verhaal eerlijk gezegd niet, u snapt vast wel dat ik dat boek moet hebben! En gewoon te koop bij de grote online bookshops, dus dat moet lukken!

Bij het eerste herfstige weer denk ik meteen: Jippie, boeken kaften, bijna kinderboekenweek en nog even en dan kan de siterklaasvoorpret beginnen! Boeken hoef ik niet meer te kaften, maar van Kinderboekenweek word ik nog steeds ontzettend blij.

Net als ik vroeger, krijgen mijn kinderen dan een boek. Bij het eerste bezoek aan de boekhandel kon ik niet kiezen. Dat gaf niet, want kinderboekenweek duurt tien dagen (ook zoiets fijns) en ik had dus nog alle tijd. Wel zag ik er een aankondiging van De Delftse Boekenbende dat blijkbaar ieder jaar plaats vindt in bibliotheek en schouwburg. Fijn om te weten dat ik in een stad ben komen wonen die ook dol is op de kinderboekenweek. Annemarie van Haeringen en Charlotte Dematons zouden komen signeren en daar moest ik dus naartoe.

Dus ging ik op zondagmiddag zonder kinderen maar met een stapel boeken en m'n camera naar de bieb. Daar zat Annemarie van Haeringen te signeren. Ze tekende een schattige ezel in het boek van een klein jongetje en zo wist ik meteen wat ik voor Daan moest kopen, het eerste deel over Kleine Ezel. Als sinds z'n geboorte hangt er een poster van Kleine Ezel op z'n kamer, dus dan moet je ook het boek hebben toch? Annemarie tekende heel rustig een prachtige ezel in z'n boek. Ik durfde nog net te vragen of ik een foto mocht maken. Dat mocht. Opeens leek zo'n grote camera zo verdreven. Ik voelde me zo'n groupie. Dus pakte ik maar m'n mobiel.

En toen dus wachten op Carlotte Dematons. Bente kreeg haar nieuwste boek als kraamcadeau en die wilde ik laten signeren. En het liefst mijn eigen favoriet, het Sinterklaasboek ook. Dus bleef ik in de buurt. Ondertussen neusde ik in de Boekie-Boekiekraam en nam allerlei mooie gratis kaartjes mee. Uiteindelijk ging ik maar tegenover de signeertafel op een bankje zitten wachten. Hoezo groupie?

 Charlotte nam alle tijd voor me. Toch was ze zelf was ze niet helemaal tevreden, volgens haar waren de bladzijden te glad om echt mooi op te tekenen. Blijkbaar zijn ook zeer succesvolle illustratoren nog bijzonder kritisch op hun eigen werk, zelfs op een handtekening. Kleine Bente kreeg een lief klein kusje van d'r. In mijn Sinterklaasboek kwam een mooie Zwarte Piet. Ik zei maar niet dat ik zelf Marije heet. Wel maakte ik nog een foto, met de mobiel. En toen ze aanbood om nog meer boeken te doen gaf ik haar -enigszins bezwaard- ook nog Fiets. Voor m'n moeder. Toen ik zei dat ik dat zo'n leuk boekje vond en vertelde ze dat het een van haar favorieten was en dat ze wel een grotere versie zou willen maken aangevuld met nieuwe tekeningen. Leuk he?

Dolblij ging ik met een tas vol kunstwerkjes weer naar huis.

English: Recently it was children book week in Holland. Our local library invited two of my favorite illustrators to sign books. I went there and brought some books, in which they drew tiny works of art which made me so happy! I just love children book week!

Ik maakte Bentes geboortekaartje net als Daans kaartje zelf. Ik sneed de stempel, stempelde me suf, printte en knipte ook nog de hoekjes van alle kaartjes. Met hulp van manlief, dat moet gezegd worden. En ik ben zo blij met het resultaat!

I made Bentes birth announcement cards by hand, just like Daans cards. I cut the stamp, stamped like crazy, printed the cards and even cut the corners. With help from the hubby, that is. And I'm so happy with the result!

Hoera een meisje!

Voor de komst van Bente versierden we natuurlijk het huis, onder andere met honeycomb balls van PSIkhouvanjou. En als de zon scheen, zag ook de vloer er heel mooi uit!

Bente is born!

Op 11 augustus 2012 is onze dochter Bente geboren! Alles is goedgegaan. Inmiddels is ze al bijna 8 weken, groeit als een gek, lacht al en is een schatje.

De kraamperiode is voorbij en ik ben al een beetje gewend aan het mama zijn van twee kindjes. Waar had ik het ook al weer zo druk mee toen ik er nog maar een had? Langzaamaan vind ik het normale ritme weer terug en hopelijk lukt het me dan ook weer om weer regelmatig te bloggen, want ik heb ideeën genoeg! En tot die tijd, tot op Twitter, Pinterest of Instagram!

On the 11th of august, 2012, our daughter Bente is born. She is doing great. I'm starting to get used to being a mum of two kids, and even wonder why having one kid felt busy once. Slowly I'm getting back to 'normal' life, and hopefully I'll be able to post once in a while, because I've got many ideas to share. Until then, see you on Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram!

Another pretty animal picture book

Door de zwangerschap en de bijkomende kwaaltjes en vermoeidheid kom ik weinig aan klussen en knutselen toe. Een boek lezen, of beter gezegd, plaatjes kijken, wil gelukkig nog wel lukken. Met 'Ik leer je liedjes van verlangen, en aan je apenstaartje hangen' hoef ik me niet snel te vervelen. In elk van 47 gedichten in het boek beschrijft Bette Westera met veel humor een dier -van schaap tot spons- en zijn problemen of eigenaardigheden. Haar prachtige ouderwetse woordkeus en soms kritische of filosofische ondertoon maken dat het boek geen standaard prentenboek voor kinderen is. Al zullen nog jonge kinderen zeker genieten van de heerlijke ritmes van de gedichten en van de prachtige prenten van Sylvia Weve. Zij zijn zo rijk van kleur en vol grappige details dat ik dit steeds weer boek blijf pakken. Dat, en de bijzondere vormgeving, maken van dit boek een pareltje.

Because of my pregnancy I don't have much energy for decorating or crafting. That's why I spent more time reading or at least looking at beautiful picture books. In this book, that isn't translated as far as I know, Bette Westera describes in 47 poems with a lot of humour, 47 animals each with their own problems and characteristics. Because of the critical an philosophical tone, this is not just a book for children, although they can also enjoy this book. Not in the least because of the beautiful illustrations by Sylvia Weve, which are so rich in colour and have so many funny details that make you picking up this book over and over again.

Ik zit niet alleen op Twitter, maar ook op Pinterest en Instagram. Het lukt me vaak beter om tijd te maken voor het 'tweeten' van een klein berichtje of posten van een foto, dan voor het schrijven van een blogpost. Dus wil je vaker van me horen, dan kan je me ook daar volgen. Op beide media heet ik 'wijeisenijs'. En doe je niet aan Instagram, dan kan je hierboven toch een paar van mijn  Instagram foto's zien.

Edit 30/3: I forgot to mention that the print in the first picture is by Julie Hendriks. You should really check out her work, it's amazing. It's very affordable too and it's the best quality art print I've ever seen.
Also, I just found out on some computers this post doesn't show two rows of four pictures (like on my MAcbook), but own long row of eight. Anyone any idea why? Or how to solve this?

Fluffy wild animals

In november schreef ik deze blogpost over een mooi geïllustreerd kinderboek en alleen al het schrijven van die post maakte me vrolijk. Dat een aantal mensen (waaronder mijn echtgenoot) naar aanleiding daarvan dit boek ook kochten deed me helemaal deugd. Uitgevers die zulke mooie boeken uitgeven verdienen wel wat steun. Ik ben gek op kinderboeken, zowel prentenboeken als jeugdliteratuur, maar daar schrijf ik hier zelden over. Dat hoop ik vanaf nu vaker te gaan doen.
Toen ik in september bij Moodkids het boek 'Wilde dieren' van Rop van Mierlo zag wist ik dat dat mijn aanschaf voor de kinderboekenweek zou worden. In de hoop nog een gesigneerd exemplaar te kunnen bemachtigen bestelde ik het meteen bij Monoshop. Inmiddels is er ook door anderen, zoals Zilverblauw, over geschreven maar het boek is het waard om er nog een keer aandacht aan te schenken. Het is een prachtig boek, iedere afbeelding is het waard ingelijst te worden. De dieren zien er zo knuffelbaar uit. En als je weet hoe Rop van Mierlo de afbeeldingen gemaakt heeft, wat te zien is in het filmpje, dan worden de afbeeldingen zo mogelijk nog meer bijzonder. O en die handtekening? Zo'n leuke tekening van een krokodil op de eerste pagina had ik bijna als handtekening over het hoofd gezien.

I bought the book 'Wild Animals' by Rop van Mierlo at Monoshop after I read about it at Moodkids. It is a beautiful book, all the illustrations deserve it to be framed. The animals look cute and fluffy. The short video shows how Rop van Mierlo made this illustrations and this makes looking at them even more special. O, and the sleeping crocodile on the first page? It's the artists signature.

Stamped stationary

De brandweerstempel maakte ik als kraamcadeautje, en toen er nog een Lucas werd geboren maakte ik er nog een kaartje en schriftje mee. De vossenstempel maakte ik voor Ballee. Zij vroeg op Twitter om een vossenstempel te ruil en maakte voor mij de mooie handwarmers. Ik gaf haar de stempel op de Swan Market, waar ik ook Rianne van Diversitijd en Lisa Manuels van Elle Aime ontmoette. Natuurlijk vergat ik vantevoren een foto te maken, maar gelukkig stempelde ik nog wel een vossenschriftje voor mezelf.

Het kostte me trouwens meer dan een maand om deze post af te krijgen. M'n Twitter volgers weten het al, ik ben weer zwanger! Net als bij Daan heb ik daardoor wat minder energie, dus de blogposts zullen nog wel even schaars blijven. Maar wie me erg mist, ik Twitter wel bijna dagelijks :).

The fire truck stamp was made as a baby shower gift, and when another Lucas was born I used it to make some small gifts. The fox stamp was made for Ballee, who asked for one on Twitter and made me the beautiful wristwarmers in return. I met her, Rianne of Diversitijd and Lisa Manuels of Elle Aime on the Swan Market in Rotterdam. I forgot to make a photo of the stamp itself, but luckily I did use it on a little notebook.
By the way, it took me over a month to finish this post. The reason is I'm pregnant again and lack energy to make blogpost. But I do tweet a lot, so if you miss me, you can find me there :)

New shelve

Wow, het is al bijna twee maanden gelden sinds m'n laatste blogpost. Ik heb me een tijdje niet zo fit gevoeld, en kwam niet aan bloggen toe, maar ik realiseerde me niet dat het al zo lang geleden was. Hoe dan ook, in de tussentijd zijn er weer wat kleine veranderingetjes geweest in huis. Zo hingen we deze Ikea-plank op, waar ik meteen -bij slecht licht- foto's van maakte. Maar dus niet hier postte. Inmiddels staan er al weer wat andere dingetjes op, maar daar zijn nog geen foto's...

Wow, it has been almost two months since my last post. I didn't have much energy for a while, and didn't feel like blogging, but I hadn't realized it was that long ago. In the mean time some small things changed in our house. We hang this Ikea shelve on the wall behind our table, and I immediately took photos of it, despite the lack of light. I didn't post them here, and now there are other things on it, but I didn't make photos of that yet so I'll show you these now...

Ik realiseerde me onlangs dat ik eigenlijk niet veel recente foto's van ons huis op dit blog heb geplaatst, met uitzondering van de babykamer. Dat komt omdat ons huis nog steeds niet helemaal klaar is. maar ik realiseer me inmiddels wel dat als ik wacht tot echt alles af is, ik kan wachten tot ik een ons weeg. Dus bij deze een paar foto's van de zithoek.


I realized I haven't showed many photos of our home here recently, except for the nursery. he reason is that it's still not finished. But I don't know if it ever will be, so for now some pictures of our living room as it is now.

The prettiest book

A couple of weeks ago it was my mums birthday and I bought her a book, 'Tikken tegen de maan'. Before I wrapped it, I read it myself and I found out how amazing this book is. I knew I had to show you because I'm sure most of you will love it, so I quickly took some pictures.

It is a collection of Dutch and Flemish poetry for children selected by Joke van Leeuwen (Dutch author, illustrator and performer). The poems are written by (relatively) well-known poets, and great on their own, but what I love about this book is that the publisher has asked starting talented -but not so well known- Dutch and Belgium illustrators to illustrate this book. When I see a book like this I'm so glad there are still small independent publishers like Ons Erfdeel.

Each spread is definitely worth framing, and there are 50! Needless to say, I had a hard time, giving this beauty away...

The risks and joys of buying online (2)

So, one more post about the risks of buying online and than back to something more positive.
First of all, the shop which never delivers my purchases apparently read my post and decided to refund after all, and send me some nice items and apologies. Of course I'm glad that that's over now, although that wasn't the reason for my post. The reason truly was that I couldn't get this experience out of my head and that I was really curious how you guys deal with situations like this.
Well, that question is answered too, because I've got a lot of reactions on my previous post, in the comments, e-mail, Twitter and IRL. It's clear that I'm not the only one with an experience like this. Luckily most of you say that it has happened only once, while they made many online purchases and that's the same for me. It is striking to me though that most of you say they have  never made that experience public, and the one person who did regets it. Only one person said we should make it public because it increases customer services at webshops in general.
The reasons for not telling about negative experiences are "not liking a negative athmosphere on your blog", "a negative comment on the internet is permanent" but also "because the seller might be popular among bloggers and a negative comment might shine back on you". You are the sweetest people really! I guess I had the same thoughts and that's why I never posted or tweeted about this before. But if it happens to me again I might tweet about it (in a constructive way if that's possible), that's less permanent than posting on a blog and it seems only fair since I also tweet about positive experiences.
Anyway, I'm glad it's over and out of my head now. Thanks for all your comments, here and elsewhere. I'll be back with a post about some beautiful stuff -a pretty children's book- soon!

The risks and joys of buying online

You all know I love to buy from independent sellers online. I'm always looking for unique items to decorate my house. I've bought numerous prints on Etsy, and many handmade, vintage or other products in mostly Dutch webshops. Usually I recieved nice packages, really quick and more often than not nicely wrapped and with great extras.
I've always tried to spread the word about these shops and their amazing service on my blog and Twitter because I know shops like that can use all support.

However, I also once had a really bad experience which I can't get out of my head. I was still relatively new in online (indy) shopping when my friends gave me some money for my 30th birthday to buy something pretty for  my home. I bought a cushion and a towel at a Dutch online shop I had read about in Dutch magazines. It felt ok, since I also 'knew' the owner via our blogs (and now also Twitter). So I thought it was safe. Then, I never received my items. I have send a couple of emails, and the answer was always: ' I am waiting for a delivery from my agent'. After a couple of months I din't believe I would ever get it and asked for a refund. I never got my money, although I've kept asking.
This person is still active in the blogging community. I could meet her in person if I would go to meet-ups of Dutch bloggers, so it feels like someone I know has stolen my money. Now every time I buy something I feel hesitant.

The thing is, although I always tweet or post about good service, I've never done so about this bad experience. I've thought about it a hundred times, because I know some of you are still buying at this shop and are taking a risk of loosing their money.
Still it feels like it's 'not done' to do so, I don't know why. I guess one of the reasons is that I don't want to discourage anyone buying from Indie sellers, because in the end usually it is a great experience. I do know I wish someone had warned me.

So guys, whats, your opinion on this? Ever hesitated buying online? Ever had a bad experience? And did you share that experience online? Did you go to the police? I'm so curious for your thoughts!
